LG OLED Dolby Vision Flickering? 5 Ways to Fix!

Are you trying to watch your favorite shows on your LG OLED TV, but suddenly noticed the flickering which got your attention and wishes to know why it happened and what needs to be done to fix it?

When we notice something, it will be very easy for us to notice it again. The same is true with flickering on your LG OLED, once you notice it, every time you watch your show, you will feel it more and experience it more.

It mostly occurs when watching HDR or Dolby Vision content, and it is more noticeable when watching dark content.

Normally, When watching a Dolby Vision movie and your TV suddenly gets brighter or darker, it’s usually a result of a scene change.

As the scene changes, the overall brightness of the image changes as well. Despite Dolby Vision’s best efforts, the compensation isn’t always perfect, due to the differences in picture content input.

Thankfully, you are not the only one experiencing this Dolby Vision flickering issue with your LG OLED, it is quite common.

It happened to me too with my LG OLED C1 and it flickered as the brightness changed. Upon closer inspection, it seemed as if portions of the screen were flashing due to the near darkness and probably the poor quality of the picture content material.

Specifically, I see the flickering only when Dolby Vision and HDR are turned on and in extremely dark sections, for example, contribute to the flickering appearance.

Apart from that while using the Netflix app on my LG OLED, I’ve noticed sometimes the image flickers, lightens, and then stays that way when watching Dolby Vision content.

Why does my LG OLED flicker with Dolby Vision?

LG OLED Screen Flicker Dolby Vision

In this section, I will explain what causes HDR flickering on LG OLED TVs.

The reason that your LG OLED TV may be flickering when it is playing Dolby Vision content could be caused by a variety of factors.

There is a possibility that the refresh rate of your TV does not match the refresh rate of the content.

Another possibility is that your TV and the external device playing the content have a problem with the HDMI connection (such as a Blu-ray player or streaming media box).

In addition, it’s possible that the TV’s firmware is causing problems with Dolby Vision, and many LG OLED TV users reported that the issue has been resolved after updating the firmware.

However, this is not true for all users. Therefore, I have listed detailed steps below which will help you fix the flickering Dolby vision issue on your LG OLED.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the troubleshooting part.

How To Fix LG OLED Dolby Vision Flickering?

There are a certain number of LG OLED TV users who have found that updating their firmware did solve this issue, but this isn’t true for all of them, and in some cases, the TV’s internal picture settings did play a role in being able to resolve the issue.

The TVs have multiple options you can choose from when they flicker their lights on and off fast to trick your eyes into seeing motion more clearly. You don’t want to use any TV at all if you are sensitive to display flicker, regardless of how well its implementation is.

I’ve aligned the below solution in such order so you don’t have to go through all of them, but be sure you followed them correctly.

Solution #1

Disable Motion Enhancement

In dark scenes, even with smooth motion turned on, LG OLED TV users reported the screen flickers when Dolby Vision was active.

I have found that this problem usually occurs when the “OLED Motion” setting is set to HIGH, so I suggest you try turning it down to medium and that should solve the problem.

Additionally, you can also try disabling motion enhancement and motion clearness, as well as setting advanced judder to 3.

  1. Go to the settings menu.
  2. Select the picture menu.
  3. Select the picture options and picture mode settings.
  4. Here you will be able to tweak the picture settings.

Solution #2

Turn Off TruMotion

However, if you have tried these steps and still have flashing or flickering in near-dark or dark scenes on your LG OLED TV, it’s likely caused by the TruMotion feature.

Steps to turn off TruMotion on LED OLED TV:

  1. Navigate to the settings menu.
  2. Select the picture menu.
  3. Select the picture options and picture mode settings.
  4. Disable TrueMotion by turning it off.

Dolby Vision and HDR content can be affected by this feature, so turning it off is recommended.

Note:

Flashing/flickering is caused by TruMotion in near-dark/dark scenes, which is especially noticeable in Dolby Vison/HDR.

Solution #3

Turn Off Dolby Vision

It usually only becomes apparent while watching a particular piece of content with Dolby Vision active, and it’s most noticeable in dark content.

Thus, you can disable Dolby Vision on your LG OLED TV so that you won’t suffer from this flickering, and this is one of the solutions you can use.

Note:

In LG OLED TVs, Dolby Vision cannot be turned off or on. It can only be controlled from apps that contain settings for controlling Dolby Vision, such as Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc.

Solution #4

Change HDMI Ulta Color Settings

In addition to the above changes, what fixed it for other users was going to the HDMI Ultra Deep Color section and enabling the HDMI input that was expected to be HDR or Dolby Vision.

Note: This step is only for those who are playing content on their LG OLED TV via HDMI-connected sources.

Solution #5

Lower The Content Quality

Another solution that has been proven and which I have discovered is that if you are using a 4K player and the Dolby Vision is flickering on it for some reason, you can solve the problem by switching the resolution of the 4K player from auto to 2160p.

There was no flickering after this and I was able to run Halloween 2 and the flickering went away. After that to verify, I ran Transformers 4K and the flickering also disappeared.

If you’re still having trouble with flickering, there are a few other things you can try. First, make sure that your television’s firmware is up to date.

Firmware updates often include fixes for bugs and other issues. To check for a firmware update, go to your television’s settings menu and look for the “update” option.

If an update is available, follow the instructions on-screen to install it.

Conclusion

The HDR or high-quality content experience is totally on a higher level than the regular content. But what good is it if it starts flickering and irritates us, I have covered all steps through which this can be solved, I hope you enjoy it and that the above steps solve the flickering issue on your LG OLED TV.
